About the Exhibition

Pinhole photography strips the camera down to its irreducible minimum: a lightproof box, a small opening, and a surface that records what passes through. No lens. No electronics. No autofocus. The image that results is compressed in time, and impossible to predict precisely, which is exactly the point. Camera Out of Nothing brings together ten photographers from Azerbaijan, the United States, and Japan who work in this medium with seriousness and range. Their subjects are mostly the street — the texture of cities, the movement of people, the quality of light in ordinary places — but the approach varies widely. What they share is a commitment to the process itself as a form of thinking. This is BCOP's first public exhibition. It grew out of a workshop — local photographers building their own cameras, developing their own film, producing work alongside established international names. The prints on these walls were made, not taken.
